Various Artists - Young Adults EP

  • Friends Of Friends, a California-based label populated by the likes of Shlomo, Salva and Groundislava, peddles the sort of freewheeling and energetic electronic sounds the kids these days have no problem getting down to. The name of their latest offshoot, Young Adults, certainly references the youthful vigor their widening discography emanates, but upon listening to their first release, an eponymous compilation EP, I can't help but fixate on the second half of their name: while not exactly prim and proper, the four tunes on offer here trade in an admirably grown-up house sound. What differentiates Young Adults from plenty of other upstart house imprints, at least judging by this statement of purpose, is its variety: you'll certainly find stuff for the club here, but their project encompasses quite a bit more. Suzanne Kraft (real name: Diego Herrera), who released a surprisingly under-the-radar EP on Running Back last summer, kicks off from a convertible winding up the Pacific Coast Highway: with loping beats, freeform '80s vocals and a profoundly smooth guitar solo ping-ponging off sun-drenched canyons, "Jus U" seems more intent on you catching some sun than sweating it out in the wee hours. Dead Rose Music Company, fresh off an EP for Let's Play House, conjures a nearly identical vibe on "Sooth Your Mind," though its heavier atmosphere signals the arrival of evening. The flip picks up the tempo considerably, though you couldn't imagine the party it soundtracks getting broken up by the cops. Newcomer Urulu's "Missing You" nails warm Bristolian house a la Futureboogie, and "Ghostpath," a collaboration between Grown Folk and LOL Boys, turns what sounds like mobile phone interference into wistful melody. If the Young Adults EP signals Friends Of Friends has come of age, then they're aging quite gracefully indeed.
