Darius Syrossian - My Side Project EP

  • There's a refreshing lack of pretension about My Side Project, which befits a good Leeds lad like Darius Syrossian. This is an EP of no nonsense house, built for the swollen masses on the dance floor and not the types who prefer to prop up the club's walls. Little wonder that DJ Sneak is one of his biggest supporters. The lead track loops a French house-style guitar lick, adding to it camp New York-style vocal drops, nagging keyboard stabs and frothing percussion. "1994 Session" ups the pace and, as the name suggests, indulges in a bit of dance music archaeology: Atop a Van Helden-like stop/start rhythm, Syrossian weaves in acid oscillations and rave accents. Syrossian protégés, Butler & Murt, drag "1994 Session" into deeper waters, with a muddier reinterpretation of the original's synth line, snappy garagey snares and adding in a breathy, Teutonic-sounding female vocal to boot.
