Fritz & Lang - 13 Hours Away EP

  • As neither member of Paris-based Franco-Argentine electronica duo Fritz & Lang are called Fritz or indeed Lang, it suggests they are film buffs, naming themselves after the great German auteur. There's certainly a widescreen approach: "13 Hours Away"'s headline features are its meowing synth bass stabs, ice-crisp drum programming and languid vocal. It's perhaps too semi-reclined for anything more than a warm-up set, but there's talent at work here. The flip, "Believe," is an electro-samba jam session which doesn't quite live up to the presence of the lead track. Le Loup's take on "13 Hours Away" is yet another impressive notch on his bedpost, with definite echoes of Pepe Bradock at work in its restrained jazz inflections, chocolate-rich pads and hypnotic pace. Another Frenchman, Ben Vedren, reworks "13 Hours Away" by stripping away much of the original's nuances to leave a driving groove with trippy bolt-ons, befitting a producer who has recently hooked up with Juan Atkins' Metroplex imprint.
