Superpitcher - Moon Fever Remixes

  • Could Kompakt have picked better people to remix "Moon Fever" than Peter "Lawrence" Kersten and the two guys who make up Gluteus Maximus? The former has been slotting house beats under classical-style melodies for over a decade, and the latter have rejigged the haunting works of Trentemøller and Sigur Rós. Both angles would seem the perfect fit for tackling "Moon Fever," an elegant piece of ambient lifted from Superpitcher's 2010 LP, Kilimanjaro. All three remixes—Kersten has done two—play out more or less as expected. Lawrence's rhythm on the first is reminiscent of his own "Just Like Heaven," but he hasn't phoned things in. An entirely new piano riff is present, fluttering about like a goldfish tail and altering the mood substantially. The structure's been reworked as well, with Kersten's beats taken to restrained peaks and cradled softly back down. The beauty of these alterations is only fully revealed by the ambient mix, which excises the percussion for a more tender finish. Gluteus Maximus' mix is much more about hypnosis. Their take lasts for nearly ten minutes, but they're eaten up with enviable speed, bursts of classical strings prodding everything else to life at opportune moments. Like Kersten, the duo's determination to produce something other than just "Moon Fever" plus a beat is evident. As a result, all three versions prove just as special as the original.
