DjRUM - Mountains Pt. 1 Remix

  • In its original incarnation, "Mountains Pt. 1" was a kind of wind-tunnel techno, with swung kicks and ticking hi-hats dancing like scraps of paper through a swirl of bowed strings and dubby clang. It was fast, too, a good 138 BPM. Pedestrian's remix is slower, locking into the low end of the UK garage spectrum, but it's far more powerful, thanks to muscular drum programming, El-B style bass belch and periodic eruptions of looped MC chatter. (That'd explain the subtitle, "Pedestrian's Pirate Radio Remix.") While it preserves all the original's ethereal atmosphere, the remix focuses on the kinetic power of the groove, with lots of short, sharp repetition driving the point home. Where "Turiya" was a relatively sleek, chord- and diva-intensive garage track, Tessela's remix adds rough-cut breakbeats and glowering bass to result in something altogether ruder. Looped chord samples take on a vibrating quality familiar from Pepe Bradock, and cycling sirens and stuttering vocal shots mirror their restless motion. Where the Pedestrian remix skulks around the dank corners of the club, this one assumes its place at the center of the floor and opens its arms wide, climax personified.
