Altered Natives - The Fates

  • Altered Natives is not the most immediately likeable character on twitter. If, however, you're not afraid of fierce swearing and highly opinionated views, he is someone you grow to love and appreciate over time. It's the same story with his highly bastardised music—challenging on first listen, but hugely rewarding if you give it the attention it deserves. Here he returns to Italian label Bosconi for an EP that continues to deal in grubby, aggressive moods and plenty of raw energy. Opener "Nono Clotho" is a tightly coiled slice of minimal rave with broody synths, pestering hi-hats and prying drum loops wriggling round each other for seven fairly intense minutes. It's dynamic thanks to the way the sub drops in and out, keeping you guessing until the end. "Decima Lachesis" is even more unsettled—birdcalls inspired by 808 State's "Pacific State" drift in and out while cantering techno beats rattle along a bleak and bumpy landscape. Softened only by some downbeat pads, the crack of the snares is key to making you shake your body. "Morta Atropos," meanwhile, is the airiest of the lot, with pensive synths encircling yet more kinetic percussive energy. There's a duality to Danny Yorke's music which reveals different messages with each listen: at once in your face and angry, but at the same time heartfelt and somehow vulnerable when you really get inside it.
