Lawrence - Etoile du Midi

  • If you were mesmerised by the intricate workouts Lawrence served up for Pampa late last year, wait until you hear his latest contribution to the Dial canon. The title track stands as a writhing, undulating homage to the delicacy of microevolution. Celestial synths open it up, but soon things disappear down into a puddly ecosystem of squirming synthetic sounds and scurrying acid twitches. Occasional offbeat snares drop in from above and momentarily raise you out of the mire, but the German's trademark soft focus melodies soon switch the vibe from one of urban decay to new world optimism. "Creator" is more bouncy but still goes long in its designs. Classic Carl Craig comes to mind for the devastating emotional punches packed by the synths, even more so on the floaty-light "Final Call" rework which gets layered up gradually: gorgeous sandy shakers, uplifting but still heavily sedated melodies and a keen sense of love lost infuse the typically languorous beats. Every so often the paddy clouds break to reveal a new little window of hope but never do you feel anything but completely comforted in Lawrence's lush deep house cushions.
