Olin & Co. Processing - Compton EP

  • When you throw a well-used vocal sample into your track, you're either lazy, stupid or cheeky (or any combination of the three), and it's a device that can end up as tired and aggravating as much as its intended effect. Chicago's Olin takes that risk on New York party and label Discovery's second release with "Compton," and luckily for him (and collaborator Co Processing), he pulls it off. That's because by the time that the instantly recognizable snippet from "Love and Happiness" drops, the breathy voice is like steam shooting from a pressurized pipe's release valve. "Compton" starts off meekly, slowly building to a shiny velvet sheen with twinkling keyboards and nudging bass—after four minutes of foreplay, something's gotta give. The brief vocal interlude is a tantalizing bit of release that lasts only the blink of an eye, but gives the quiet storm jam all the more power in its steady cruise. The flipside "Oslo" further highlights Olin's apparent interest in Italo disco, as a scurrying bassline acts as bumpy foundation for freehand synth work which owes more than a little to Moroder. Glaswegian outfit OOFT! refit "Compton" with a burping acid bassline, making the synth brushstrokes wider for a much more vibrant canvas, while Nils Penner favours low-end funk, turning the track into a heavily-phased deep house roller. Both remixes are aimed at the floor, but their heavy-handed approach reveals the deceptive nuance hidden inside Olin's patient but silky smooth house.
