Ph0t0machine - On U EP

  • Ph0t0machine kicks off 2020 Midnight Visions, a sub-label of Ralph Lawson's enduring and consistent venture of a similar name, by looking to the future, but revealing a heart that beats in the past. The Brixtonian producer was associated with the bass scene from the get-go but "Feelin'" is nothing more than raw, stripped back house that's been dunked in electronic funk. It pulls off a spot of aural sorcery by sounding like some long lost Warehouse classic and yet very now, having sold its soul to the dark side in order to obtain its filthy bass keys. Next, subliminally or not, old skool jam "Throb" acknowledges the debt owed by house music to early electro producers like Man Parrish. In Funkineven, Ph0t0machine has a kindred spirit; his stuttering, acid-squiggled take on "On U" comes on like a cryogenically-kept Adonis, warmed up to room temperature. In truth, Ph0t0machine's original mix—all rattling cowbells, percussive tics and wobbly, grumbling synths—feels a little too linear in approach, particularly in the context of what's gone on before. As an overall statement of intent, however, it's a bold and successful one.
