Matthias Zimmermann - Oasis Dub

  • Someone's been listening to Pépé Bradock—that's what it sounds like from the fluttering, tightly looped chords and staccato cries that open "George," a bewitching new production from Matthias Zimmermann. As the song expands into a kind of luminous, atmospheric funk, the Bradock comparisons continue, from the bird-like synth leads to a background wash of distant clatter and running water. It's clearly a track intended for the club's first hour—it would also make a lovely mixtape opener—but Bordeaux's Noob, who has previously recorded for Turbo, Night Slugs and Sound Pellegrino, toughens it up into a broken electro funk workout that sets bashing snares against voluminous chord samples. Coni's remix goes for muted house in the style of Smallville or Aim, complete with dusty Roland drum machines, bluesy chords and the looped whisper, "I love her with my dreams." Zimmermann's other track here, "Maria," again avails itself of stuttering vocal samples and rich keys, but this time the results sound slightly more conventional, echoing Todd Edwards and "Hyph Mngo" as it whips cries of "Higher" into a frenzied cloud of vocal chop and re-triggered drum samples. Still, it's effective, with a mellifluous acid line pulling it all together. Boysnoize Records' SCNTST takes another tack entirely with his remix, boiling the parts down into jacking, squealing techno flayed by flailing hi-hats and threatening to come apart at the seams.
