Kim Brown - Spring Theory

  • Just Another Beat is easily one of contemporary house's most mysterious labels. After four narcotic nocturnes from unknowns Jouem and Prostitune, the label released Gunnar Jonnson's Relationer, which presented a comparatively tangled and psychedelic palette. With Kim Brown's Spring Theory, Just Another Beat returns to releasing unknowns, though the record's contents are easily its two sunniest tracks yet. "Camera Moves" takes its time building up to a silvery bassline, though it's hardly needed as an anchor—the track's pervasive hand-drums and elegiac, eyes-on-the-horizon strings signify summer evenings as well as any bassline could. On the flip, the strutting "This Will Like Never Be the Same" appears to sample a segment of Jamie Principle's "Your Love"—not the obvious arpeggio, but the brief bit near the end where the synth breaks into a wavy solo. It's heavily filtered, and whether it's actually a sample is questionable. Regardless, it shares that track's wistful ambience, balancing it with draggy bass and rhythms that grow and recede with the filters. Spring Theory may well be a new leaf for Just Another Beat—it sounds like the label is finally seeing the sunrise, albeit through thick smog.
