Unbalance - Fluid EP

  • After releasing four white-label, clear vinyl releases over the past half-year or so, it's nice to see Unbalance try out something new. The Russian techno producer hit upon on a neat sound with that series of records—dubby and loose, yet still raw and floor-friendly—but it had all started to feel a bit too same-y for me. Of his two original tracks on Fluid, the fifth vinyl on Ukraine's Mutex Recordings, the self-titled track adheres most closely to that approach, making decent work of some offbeat shudders and sneaky melodies. But I'm more impressed by "Wanna Be Yours," which drops a strangely addictive vocal sample into a cacophonous assemblage of drums, claps and tweaked-out effects. Jonas Kopp then takes firm control with two remixes. The first is credited to his relatively new project, Manzel, but I don't see a big change in style, aside from it feeling just a bit more reduced and relaxed than his usual fare. At least, it should go down easier than the eight minute-long version under Kopp's own name. That one seems to take forever to build to a sharp, dubbed-out peak, but it's a journey worth taking to hear such supremely textured percussion. Come to see some diversity from Unbalance, but stay for further proof that Kopp, who's already put out a grip of tracks and remixes this year, is in fine form at the moment.
