Chamboche - Metacoma EP

  • Nottingham's own Sam Williams, AKA Chamboché, is the modern-day keeper of the flame of a hometown house scene—led by the legendary DiY Soundsystem—that has had a serious part to play in the last two decades of the UK's underground dance movement. Williams has recently moved to London, but there's no dimming of the fire in his belly on Metacoma's evidence. Lead track "Mello" builds from a bed of moody percussive stabs and pinging cowbells before opening out into some low-key, disco-flavoured deep house. The first of two reworkings of "Mello" by BLM finds the Fear Of Flying label head taking it into deliberately lo-fi territory. Sounding like the jack-in-the-box rhythm's being played out on a blown speaker, BLM adds in tough kicks, leaving just traces of the original's smooth pads. BLM's digital-only rerub incorporates undulating synth swells, galloping percussion and hints of classic garage in the rhythm track. Of two other Chamboché productions, "Show It" storms into a warehouse party with bags of FX, delay and a rumbling acid bassline, while "Perpetual Motion" summons up the spirit of Marshall Jefferson's "Move Your Body" and transplants it into some intricately patterned, deep, sunset house. An EP of intelligent, quality house music.
