Debukas - Pleasure Patterns

  • Pleasure Patterns is a well-crafted and distinct sophomore effort on 2020 Vision from the Glasgow-based Debukas. A welcoming, accessible EP, it's nevertheless deceivingly sculpted, a collection of tracks that rewards immediacy and immersion in tandem. Opener "Loads of Time" demonstrates this demeanour extensively, a house track that steadily increases its infectiousness as it wears on. "Titanic"'s entrenched melodies overlap and intertwine, before being pulled together by the culminating bassline. "Knowledge," meanwhile, delves into denser territory, frenetic and sharp compared to the comfortable swing of "Golden Mind." Warm basslines also permeate "Send Me Out" and "Rings," their shiny exteriors and catchy lyrics reinforced with genuine weight. Slippery and glistening, "Golden Mind" represents the apex of the anthemic pop sensibilities that seep from Pleasure Patterns. There's an effortless progression that draws from both house and the glossy excess of '80s synth pop. Pional's remix contains echoes of collaborator John Talabot, its focus lying with build-and-release, and it's a fitting, successful interpretation.
