Trevino - Buried

  • Marcus Intalex's long-overdue debut album last year showed that the drum & bass vet listens to more than just the genre he's most associated with. He's gone and made good on the promise that 21 hinted at with his new alias Trevino, an initially-anonymous venture set aside for his non drum & bass projects. Judging from its solo debut on casual trendsetter [nakedlunch], it would seem that the Trevino project is aimed squarely towards the 4/4 side of things, and the music pressed into this particular slab of wax betrays a surprising familiarity with the form on Intalex's part. Unlike some other recent moves towards house by UK bass denizens, Intalex's brand is plush with vibrancy, like the rubbery writhing bassline and chords of "Buried" that seem to waft from the beats like sparks from stone-on-stone collisions. The whole thing is tightly-coiled and melodic in a way that recalls the best of prime-era Minus material, but much more physical, maybe even primitive. That brutal primacy is more obviously present in "Derelict," which is a drum lover's dream—a no-bullshit analogue stomper overstuffed with rambunctious hi-hats and jumpy snares that sound like they're being played by hand.
