Bloodman - Mars II

  • Deca Rhythm—run tripartite by Headhunter, Orphan101, and Bloodman—has thus far been one of Bristol's weirdest young labels. Its most unpredictable moments come from the latter producer, whose new Mars II EP keeps up with the speedy Aderrall twitch of his past work but with a cinematic new scope that seems to take inspiration from a rather surprising place. "Suspended in Time" begins with a squelchy sequencer that... well, I'm just gonna throw in the words "Infected Mushroom" and let you figure that one out. But as those vivid drum breaks spill out from the centre and the track's horizons seem to push out further and further widescreen over some serious car-chase adrenaline, it's hard not to be dazzled by it all. A little more subdued, "Red Fungus" starts with little pretense as strings and synth swirl in ominous patterns, before a sampled drum break thunders cracks in the supple clouds. From there the track speeds forward through a forest rave, its darting, pointy bassline finding gorgeous contrast with the synth washes that trickle down the background. Swelling in and out, it can't help but recall a more dramatized version of some of Scuba's recent material, and it's every bit as effective in its oversaturated vivacity. Just don't call it psytrance. That wouldn't be... entirely accurate.
