- Of the many forms it has taken over the years, Bristol-based Alec Storey's music has always incorporated twitch and glitch in a smooth and effortless way, as if the catches in the grooves were just a natural byproduct of the music. It's lent his work a particularly nervy, anxious energy, bass music that didn't fit into any particular genre box because it's too fidgety to stay still. Over the past year Storey's sound has thinned out into a pseudo-junglist blitz—all pins and needles instead of amen breaks—and his first release for Sneaker Social Club is the most cohesive effort in this vein yet.
"Habit 7" has a bit of a jazzy swing to it, but it's one of his most intensely fussed-over tracks, with a drum pattern that feels like it's dicing the bassline into tiny pieces. A series of filtered chords and sparkly synths dot the track deliberately as the bassline swells, like an eight-minute audiogram of creeping moss. A bit more assertive, "Inventing" pairs Pearson Sound-style stabbing basslines with bigger drums and throws the whole thing in a slow-motion tumble dryer before dissolving into an extended speech sample. Yep, this thing's a bit of a shamanic journey, and while it's not always an easy ride, the chances are you won't be bored.
