Nick Harris - Dispatches EP

  • Nick Harris loves house music. He probably loved it before you did and he certainly loved it before all the young guns in his hometown of Bristol started dallying with it in recent years. In fact, he loves it so much he has started another imprint so he can release yet more of the stuff. Stoned Immaculate will allegedly differ from his 15 year old NRK in that it will offer "straight up house cut from simple cloth." Don't let that put you off, though, because the inaugural release is a long way from being featureless fodder designed only for the floor. I mean, it will make you dance, sure, but it will also likely have you enquiring after it as well. Opener "Under Control (Dub Mix)" for example is firm but somehow supple at the same time. Made up of eager synths, NYC-indebted elastic beats and bass and simple hi-hat and clap combos, it's everything house music should be without trying too hard. Same story with "Surfing with Kilgore," except this one has you thinking of sunny terraces rather than sweaty little basements. "I Feel Like Movin" leans on woody hits for its rhythm, a short vocal hook for its soul and a scattered, muted melody for its titillation. There's an effortless slickness and simplicity to everything here—something which only comes with the house heritage of a man like Harris.
