813 - Spectrum Riff EP

  • Having released predominantly on local Russian labels to date, Goryachev Alexander, AKA 813, joins more established acts from his home country such as DZA, Pixelord and Lapti in bringing his sound to the wider music community with this new EP on Brighton's skweee specialists Donky Pitch. This is no novice work though, with notable support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs and Radio 1 newbie Skream. "Firefighter" fizzles from the off with a stuttering mesh of zig-zagging stabs and a heavy background beat. "Bluebirds" adds sugar-coated 8-bit energy with subtle wailing guitar riffs flying into the sunset when not intersected by the crashing and rolling drums. There is a familiar sound from the start of the EP to the end, a cross between Rustie's early stripped down productions on Stuff and the more lush moments from HudMo. For those not keen on 2009 nostalgia, there's the epic "Plumbeous Bubbles"—a banging blend of boogie, electro and rave more akin to West Coast producer Salva. "Tinky Tonky" slows it down to a more familiar boogie tempo. But the highlight of this record, alongside "Plumbeous Bubbles," is undoubtedly the Slugabed remix of "Tinky Tonky"—a roller coaster ride of guitar riffs, synthetic funk and beats that you'll want to play again and again.
