Beat Pharmacy - Inside Job

  • Having grown from a label initially intended as an outlet for The Rapture remixes, NYC's Throne of Blood is hanging ever more at ease with the go-to dancefloor labels of the day. Here they reach yet further outside their immediate circle, calling on the services of South African dub technician Brendon Moeller for their first EP of 2012. It's an EP that seems to find Moeller in as playful and mobile a mood as I can remember. The housey title track sets an extroverted tone from the off—fluid, spiralling synths, squelchy, soft-acid basslines and cheery, glassy melody lines all stream along next to each other full of the joys of spring. "In a Trance in France" is a little more cerebral, with ethereal notes drifting above a more guttural kick and bass combo as the whole dreamy arrangement shifts shape gently throughout its six distracted-sounding minutes. "Hootin and Tootin" is a much tauter affair—its lines are straighter and more rigid, rattling along above monolithic kicks as various percussive slices and mangled machine noises dart in and out. Closer "Comet" gets loose and airy, looking to the stars as it skips along beneath them with watery drips and drops running down its front. There's a lot of ground covered here, all of it well designed and skillfully finished.
