Gabriele Carasco Meets Angelina Yershova - Beyond Colors EP

  • You might have heard of Signor Andreoni, who co-runs T-Bet along with Acirne and Cherry Baker, through an excellent series of twelve inches from 2006 and 2007 called Tuning Spork Blues Experiment. Along a similar line, T-Bet's sound has a kind of jazzy electronica flourish, but with strong, floor-focused riffs and sturdy drums. Beyond Colors is at its most acoustic, elegant end, heavy on acoustic instruments, and full of pianos in particular. There are a few camps using piano prominently these days, but not so many with this much sensitivity. The fluttering chords and twinkling arpeggios of the keys set an air of gypsy mystique all through the single—especially in "Beyond Colors," where they're joined by clattering drums and pattering cymbals, scratching violins and a rubbery double bassline. There's a stronger kick in the original and remix of "Overlapping Hands," which bring that ambiance closer to the dance floor with a louder and crisper drum track. The original joins a shuffling two-step with a house thump, and has a lighter mood of mature serenity, whereas the Signor Andreoni remix goes deeper with hypnotic ostinatos and a rich growl of a bassline. The propulsiveness they add is, happily, well-judged.
