Voiski - Circumsolar

  • It's a generous act, giving away an EP or album for free, but that's what the Paris-based label Silicate Musique did with Voiski's No Field Without Powerline and Mamali and His Doves In Art. The imprint currently offers all 16 of its releases gratis. Ambient with a touch of experimental, both of Voiski's contributions showed an assured producer at work. Circumsolar is more straightforward, offering four Detroit-influenced pieces made for the dance floor. "Persephon 399" is riddled with two flavours of synth. The first is an elastic snapping, which acts as a bassline in the absence of something deeper. Moving in concert with a flickering hi-hat, the two impart plenty of insistence. The second element is gentler; wispy clouds that drift and catch on the edges of the sharper sounds. "Kosmos 3M" and "Quantum Leap" are similarly boisterous, utilising filter-heavy, cartwheeling hooks which are as much about rhythm as they are melody. "Medamothi," however, is the most worthwhile track of the release. Coldly luminescent, it has a similar feel to Conforce's Dystopian Elements EP. The first section is spent carefully building the power of a sinister backing pad. From the midway, a more dominant synth takes the fore, swaying back and forth in a hypnotic fashion.
