Esperanza - Jaipur

  • Having piqued the interest of the leftfield electronica big hitters (Holden, Abbott, et al.) with their last single, Italian trio Esperanza make a play for those who prefer the darkest recesses of Berghain with "Jaipur." It's like some unholy mix of surf rock dude Dick Dale and Luke Slater-like techno, with Cramps-mimicking guitars, live drums and a foreboding, booming 4/4 beat colliding with, um, congas. Unsurprisingly for a track named "Fiore" (Italian for flower, non-linguists), the flip is an altogether more calmer effort. Dubstep influences, the distant carousel of an accordion and some "Albatross"-style guitar flourishes are an eternity away from the intensity of the lead cut. Perhaps most notable of all is Walls' "Jaipur" remix. It's difficult to discern if there's any remainder of the original left, but even if there's not, this is more of the same imperious, sweeping ambient techno we've come to expect from Messrs Willis and Natalizia. Swell upon swell of emotive synth pads wash into each other, all but covering up a bout of frantic, buzzing strings. It's no surprise that it's another fine Walls remix that gets the headline, but that fascinating, slightly crackers original is an unexpected, if a tad odd, treat.
