Paradox - Ambiguity

  • The album-length return of Dev Pandaya under his Paradox alias finally occurred this year with Ramifications, a record full of taut drumfunk science that proved that Paradox had lost none of its power in the last decade. But for this writer, Pandaya's always been his strongest when he incorporates more junglist features into his music—his Alaska 12-inch "Boreal" was easily the best thing he's done under any alias in years. Pandaya's newest Paradox 12-inch gives it a run for its money. It's completely unfettered by any modicum of restraint or rigidity that might have lingered on Ramifications. "Ambiguity" is a barnstormer, hinting at Pandaya's usual drumfunk twitch before taking flight in full-on breaks mode, navigating through fogs of low-end rumbles and bits of distorted Reese basslines that lick like angry flames. "Paralexia" is more typical Paradox material, sending tight loops through a sea of dubby FX and echoing samples, but no less brutal: both tracks are nearly capsized by sub-bass stabs, the type of which could blow your speakers if you aren't careful, a physicality that's more violent than musical. And really, what's more exciting than danger?
