Ethyl & Flori - Shelter

  • Ethyl's been knocking around with his assured deep house sounds for a while now. Early on it was reliable labels like Cécille and Freerange which saw something worth championing in the London producer, but now it's the Secretsundaze imprint who snap him up (alongside occasional collaborator Flori) for a 12-inch release that suggests the pair have matured their sound. "Shelter" is all about a careful one-finger tinkle on the keys and how it's left to meander in the warm atmospherics above this pair's dusty, wubby bottom ends. Above said sandy beats, solemn strings and sparse percussive ticks, the keys flicker like a candle in some darkened room with wood-lined walls. Too deft for a warm up set and more sincere than you might want on a come down, Rolando subtly re-works the track for dancing purposes. His jostling house remix is faster and more impatient. It brings the drums to the fore and remains warm as you like thanks to the smearing of strings which characterise it from start to finish.
