  • When it comes to music, Claude VonStroke has never taken life too seriously. In the space of a decade, the US DJ, producer and label owner has crafted one of the strongest identities in dance music, best-known for a style of wall-shaking house that champions fun over functionality. As a teenager growing up in Detroit, his musical education began with hip-hop (as a rapper) and then drum & bass (as a one-man live act), but it wasn't until years later in San Francisco that things finally clicked. Spurred on and inspired by close friends Justin and Christian Martin, he set up Dirtybird, a label that would become synonymous with a certain type of dance floor hit. From his own "Who's Afraid Of Detroit," "Aundy" and "Vocal Chords" to breakthrough cuts from Tim Green, Eats Everything and Julio Bashmore, VonStroke has had a hand in a long list of modern classics. Back in May, the bearded DJ swung by our London office for a lively and light-hearted chat with Carlos Hawthorn, touching on his short-lived film career, Ibiza and why he's done with making albums.
