- Ron Trent is hardly an old man by American house music standards, but he's certainly one of the genre's key veterans. By his account, he started DJing before he turned ten, and in his early teens in the 1980s, he started tinkering with drum machines and synthesizers. During that time, he produced one of Chicago's all-time classics in the form of "Altered States," a sprawling jack track that got caned by the likes of Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. His own productions, his classic collaborations with Chez Damier and the music he helped bring into the world via the seminal Prescription imprint would grow lusher and more musically complex, spurred on by a move to New York (where he held a residency at the classic party Giant Step) and his own development as a musician. He's been back in Chicago for awhile now and, more recently, back to a busy touring schedule—which is how Ron found his way to our Berlin office for a chat that lent some valuable perspective to this journey.
