  • Danny Tenaglia's career has spanned eras. It began in Brooklyn in the late '70s and early '80s, where he honed his craft at roller discos and dreamed of playing the famous nightclubs across the bridge in Manhattan. His first brush with fame, though, came in Miami in the mid-'80s, where his wide-ranging afterhours sets and appearances at early editions of the Winter Music Conference turned heads. Back in New York during an early '90s boom in major label-funded dance music, he became one of the period's most in-demand remixers, a fixture on the international DJ circuit and a resident at some of the city's top clubs. Few have been so intimately involved in so much dance music history, so when we heard Tenaglia would be in Berlin to play a double-header at Berghain and Panorama Bar last month, we had our fingers crossed he'd be able to make time for us. Tenaglia took us all the way back to the beginning, and spoke on record for the first time about a moment a few years ago when it looked like he was set to retire.
