- Bill Brewster quite literally wrote the book on DJing. Alongside Frank Broughton, Brewster penned the definite history of the DJ, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, and the ultimate how-to book, How To DJ Properly. Originally from the Northern English town of Grimsby (a place that he says lived up to its name) Brewster trained as a chef before moving to London in the mid-'80s. There he found himself living in squats, and discovered house music in the capital's gay clubs. He later moved to New York and experienced the dying days of the city's golden nightlife era, a time period that would eventually influence his own party, Lowlife. These days Brewster is most readily associated with DJ History, a site that he started alongside Broughton that he describes as dance music's potting shed, but his latest project is After Dark, the first instalment in Late Night Tales's brand new mix series. All of this was up for discussion as RA's Stephen Titmus spent time with Brewster in London last month.
