  • Afrobeat drumming legend Tony Allen and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will team up for a very special edition of Red Bull Music Academy's Broad Casting series later this week at Cargo. Allen is one of the pioneering musicians in the Afrobeat movement, a man who helped shape the genre just as much as Fela Kuti. The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, meanwhile, started their career half a world away in Chicago, where they have recorded with hip-hop luminaries such as Mos Def and Erykah Badu. On Thursday night, however, the two will perform together, with Allen providing double the firepower that the ensemble usually has in the rhythm section. The performance comes as part of RBMA's Broad Casting series, which brings together unlikely collaborators to the table to see what happens. Previous participants have included Buraka Som Sistema and Micachu and The Shapes, as well as Jimi Tenor and Kabu Kabu. On this night, at least, opening things up will be Elmore Judd and Malcolm Catto.
