- Breaks heavyweight Krafty Kuts goes straight to the source on the latest volume in the 'Back to Mine' series.
Breaks heavyweight Krafty Kuts goes straight to the source on the latest volume in the 'Back to Mine' series due out in January.
Past instalments in the series have delved into the downtempo music collections of the likes of Royksopp, Bugz in the Attic and Adam Freeland, but for his mix, Martin Reeves shines the spotlight on some of the most famous tracks borrowed in hip hop.
From The Soul Searchers 'Ashley's Roadclip' (used by Eric B & Rakim, PM Dawn, LL Cool J among others) to Roy Ayer's 'Searchin' (hello, Pete Rock), and the Incredible Bongo Band's 'In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida (ripped by Nas and pretty much everyone), Reeves wears his hip hop influences on his sleeve. Kenny Dope's 'Making a Living', whose vocal was famously sampled on Paul Kalkbrenner's 'Gebrunn Gebrunn', also makes an appearance. Besides the history lesson in samples there's also trip hop (Massive Attack), old skool electro (Captain Rock), indie-disco (Who Made Who), bodypoppin' breakdance anthems (Tyrone Brunsdon) as well as a few Krafty cuts.
