  • Philadelphia’s man with the microphone Someone Else releases his debut LP this summer. ‘Pen Caps and Colored Pencils’ will arrive in June. Someone Else is the alter ego of one Sean O'Neal, self-proclaimed “Armand Van Helden of the minimal scene.” (because he does so many remixes, not because he’s particularly buff.) Before he caught the techno bug in the late nineties, he was the force behind indie-pop outfit Flowchart, but these days he’s known for minimal releases on labels such as Alphahouse, Kickboxer as well as his own Foundsound and Unfoundsound imprints. Other notches on his belt include founding Tuning Spork with Jay Haze, getting together a live act which constantly tours the world, and inventing his own, er, unique approach to sampling, which wedges field recordings and found sounds into dancefloor shapes. RA asked Someone Else what the most unusual sample was on ‘Pen Caps and Colored Pencils’: “I sampled everything from spilling pencils to my own throat noises,” admits O’Neal. ‘Pen Caps…’ is Someone Else’s first foray into the longplayer format, not counting his umpteen releases as Flowchart in the nineties. Was translating techno into an album format, like people say, a difficult business? “Translating techno into an album format is not difficult because it's merely more tracks.” Of course! ‘Pen Caps…’ promises manipulated voices, Spike Jones goofiness and dark clickhouse gut-stretchers for your buck. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, check out this video for Someone Else’s ‘Picture Perfect’ to get to know Someone Else, by RA's reckoning is one of the coolest techno videos ever made. To celebrate the release of the album, RA is also offering one track from ‘Pen Caps…’ as an exclusive download to readers – the yawning chasm-like ‘Pooty Call’. Check it out.
