  • Belgian duo The Glimmers raid the secondhand record store for their latest compilation 'FabricLive'. The Glimmers’ Benoelie and Mo met as teenagers at a bar in Ghent, Belgium, the dance capital that also gave rise to the 2 Many DJs/Soulwax collective. The pair cut their DJ teeth spinning long sets in the bar Fifty Five and even in a former Eskimo underwear (?) factory. Their marathon sessions mingling disco, reggae and hip hop, paving the way for the eclectic sets later captured on compilations for their own Eskimo Recordings and the DJ Kicks series. “That was a very good learning school and I think that is really the base of how we play now,” explain The Glimmers. "We were so focused on covering the whole musical landscape as much as possible, though, of course, we had 10-11 hours time compared to nowadays having two hours, sometimes an hour and a half.” On their FabricLive mix, the pair look back to their teenage influences and beyond, mixing up bands from twenty to thirty years ago (Roxy Music, the Human League and Freeez) with current dance names (Prins Thomas, LCD Soundsystem and Mekon). So why reach back so far? Mo says: “It is quite easy to pick up the big tunes that we know people go crazy for, which we don’t hesitate to play in our sets, but we don’t want to choose those ones for a mix CD because after four months you can’t listen to the CD anymore. Our goal is always to have a CD that you can listen to in four years which still doesn’t bother you. I think we have the power to do that.” The pair, who have also remixed New Order, Isolee, The Killers and Bloc Party, also weigh in with a remix of Freddie Mercury's 'Love Kills' plus a track off their newest label Diskimo.
