Superfreq returns to Ibiza

- Mr. C’s Superfreq parties on Ibiza have been on hold since July, but next month they’re back, this time at DC-10. Mr. C explains all to RA�
- Superfreq’s Wednesday parties at Underground on Ibiza had a reputation for 100% no-bullshit focus on the music: no flyers, no posters, no tourists, no overpriced drinks, no outrageous door charges, simply DJs, two turntables and music all night long with solid lineups featuring the likes of Mr. C, Craig Richards, Paul Daley from Leftfield and Tim Sheridan. But the fun all came to end this year, when the party split with the venue after a bust-up at this year’s opening party. Internal bickering over money was the issue with Mr. C and longtime Underground promotions partner Lewis Pennington upping and leaving the club over a longstanding issue about shares in the night. Resident Mr. C gave RA the lowdown. “Things came to a head a couple of days after we did our Superfreq opening party on June 28. Lewis gave them the ultimatum of coming through with their promises or he would leave, and they didn't, so Lewis left.” But Mr. C remains circumspect about the split, which ended an association of three years with Underground. “Hosting Superfreq at Underground was a real pleasure for me. The fact that it's such a beautiful venue meant it was the perfect place to launch a new night. The last two seasons, Superfreq has been absolutely full to capacity at Underground and I would have been more than happy to keep it there as an underground free project.” Keeping the night cheap and cheerful is a big motivation behind keeping Superfreq in smaller confines on Ibiza. Capacity at new home DC-10 is just 1000. “The fact that all the big clubs charge fifty euros to get in is a money grab from the holidaymakers which I really do not want to be a part of. Underground appealed because the drinks were reasonably priced and it was a free party… perfect. DC10 is the only club other I could've moved Superfreq to in Ibiza. The venue is great, the sound is amazing, the security are really nice and the drinks are as cheap as at Underground.” RA asked Mr. C if he was feeling the pressure of relocating to DC-10, especially after the club pulled the plug on Mayer & Lazarus’ Stink parties three weeks into the season. “It's a shame it didn't work for Damian & the boys as I love their stuff at Crosstown Rebels. Ibiza is such a difficult place to put on parties as the crowds there are a real community which you have to become a part of to make it work. Nothing works in its first year.” Mr. C puts the success of Superfreq down to integrating into the local community. Those who attended his Superfreq nights at Underground would have been struck by how local an affair it was with many of the punters being Spanish. Mr. C explains the secret of his success. “I put many years of hard work into Ibiza before doing Superfreq, playing for Circoloco on a regular basis, doing various one-off DJ sets at most of the big clubs. It was because of all of this work and becoming a part of the Ibiza community that Superfreq was a success. I feel no pressure whatsoever in getting the crowds in at DC-10. We had 800 people at Underground week in week out on only an SMS message. No poster of flyers whatsoever. Making this step up & with the huge promotion that DC10 are going to do, I'm 100% certain that DC10 on Wednesdays will be rammed. Also, Ibiza is packed. I couldn't hire a car last week for love nor money so there's no problem with lack of numbers on the island.” Admission will be free at Superfreq DC-10 edition before 2 a.m for all mankind, and advance ticket buyers and Superfreq members get in for 10 euro, half the price of the regular door charge.
