  • Minimal seeps overground on latest CD comp 'Destroy Minimal’… There’s the underground, and there’s the overground, and a sign that one is becoming the other is the infamous anonymous mix compilation. Latest double CD on Resist ‘Destroy Minimal’ features cuts by Alter Ego, Trentemoeller and Ricardo Villalobos, but you have to look deep into the fine print of the press notes to discover the name of the DJ, which turns out to be J16. Who dat? Compilations sold by genre rather than DJ name are common in mainstream dance markets, especially house and trance, catering to the clubber who likes their music but has little interest in who's actually behind the decks. So is the forthcoming comp ‘Destroy Minimal’ aimed at the “throw a bit of trance in your cart at Tescos and don’t forget the pea soup” brigade? Or does it signal something new – the triumph of the producer over the DJ? Either way, its the first “minimal” CD RA knows of to get the genre-sell treatment, and it certainly catches the zeitgeist kerfuffle with its title… But hang on, before you rush to judgement, it’s on Resist Records, the same label responsible for James Holden's 'At the Controls' and Miss Kittin's 'Bugged Out'. Should we be expecting quality? A close look at the tracklist reveals dreaded M-word genre confusion – the mix features everything from deep house (Dennis Ferrer; Schwarz, Dixon and Ame) and beardo disco (Lindstrom) to neu-prog (Lazy Fat People) and electrohouse (Stephan Bodzin), but there’s also some bonafide minimal house and techno on it such as Cassy's 'Marylin's Wake', Alex Under's 'El Encuentro' and Mike Shannon's 'Valence'. So, some great tracks but er… who's the DJ? Is J16 the warp-marking intern at Resist? Or a pseudonym of Jambi? Turns out J16 is Jerry, the owner of online record store City16. Naturally, the tracklist comes with a footnote that if you like any of the tracks you can buy them all on vinyl at, surprise surprise, City16. So do you want to go shopping?
