  • July 22, 2006. Radioactivity is a weekly roundup of the best radio shows, podcasts and downloadable sets online. Things to listen to while you’re sunbathing. *** Beats in Space: This week’s guest on Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space radio show is Munk from Gomma Records (Headman, Who Made Who). Tim Sweeney is a DFA affiliate who regularly spins with Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy around New York and his radio show is a real treat: it’s dance music at heart but not purist about it; in true DFA fashion you’re as likely to hear Hot Chocolate or Marianne Faithful as Green Velvet. There’s a lot of listening to be had in the archives with older sets from fellow dance eclectics Optimo, Trevor Jackson, Lindstrom and Darsan Jesrani… all downloadable with tracklists to boot. Listen live here [real] or here [mp3] Tuesday nights 10:30 p.m to 1:00 a.m GMT –4. And if you like the sound of Munk, there’s some older sets at the Gomma site for d/l as well. Digital Russian: Deepmix is a station streaming 24/7 out of Russia, which sounds as dodgy as hell but these guys are straight up. If you can’t be bothered sifting through the thousand of sets out there, let them do the choosing because they know their music with classic sets like 'Luciano live@weetamix' and 'Lawrence and Carten Jost live@betalounge 2002' on constant rotation. They’ve also got exclusive live sets recorded at Obo&Hobos studio for download including offerings from Lawrence, Villalobos, Superpitcher/Tobias Thomas and well as local Russian DJs. A goldmine. Mr. Fingers: On the other hand, www.ump3.de are a bit dodgy, with hundreds of non-legit sets for d/l, but RA notices that they’ve moved into the netlabel business too with a string of proper releases on their label Infaces Records. Diversity is key here with sets ranging from hard techno to house. The bigger names on the label are Mistress Barbara, Henrik B, Gabriel Ananda and DJ Preach, but the pick of the bunch is a set from the legendary Larry Heard, aka Mr. Fingers, who weighs in with an inimicable dose of deep house. You can download CD covers, too, which is a nice touch. Extreme prog: Last weekend Extrema Outdoor Festival went head to head with the long-running Dance Valley Festival in Amsterdam for the first time and reports so far suggest that the risk paid off with plenty of festivalgoers choosing the largely all prog line-up at Eindhoven over Dance Valley in Spaarnwoude. Young Greek producer Kosmas Epsilon, whose bootleg of FC Kahuna's 'Hayling' made its way onto James Holden's ‘Balance’ CD, played a lakeside set of twinkly melodic and driving progressive house at Extrema, which you can listen to at VPRO. Other new sets from Extrema include Dutch proggers 16 Bit Lolitas and Bart van Wissen, as well as DJ Hyper with The Prodigy's Leeroy Thornhill. Where they’re at: This week on BBC’s Essential Mix is a set from Âme, the force behind the recent production hat-trick of ‘Rej’, ‘Where We At’ and ‘Phuture Bound’. You’ve heard the tracks played by other DJs, but their set is a chance to hear where it comes from. Âme’s Germanic twist on deep house and Detroit has been dominating clubs this year – does it signal a shift in Europe back towards more American-sounding productions? Hear the evidence Sunday morning 1 a.m to 3 a.m GMT. As always, their stream is archived for one week if you’re out and about Saturday night. There you have it. If you have any links to fantastic music which you want to share with the world, post them in the forum or send 'em along to [email protected] with the subject line ‘Radioactivity’. *** Radioactivity - delivered to your door with the milk every Saturday morning GMT.
