'The future sound of...' takes a peek at the release slate of some of the busiest studio workhorses. This week we speak to Kompakt capoeira king Gui Boratto.
Hailing from Sao Paulo in Brazil, Gui Boratto is one of the newest names to emerge from the Kompakt stable. First release on the label deep minimal techno brooder 'Arquipelago' was played by everyone from DJ. T to Hernan Cattaneo. Since then Gui has racked up housier grooves on Steve Bug's Audiomatique and Terry Lee Brown Jr's Plastic City labels plus two more twelves for Kompakt. His recent 'Like You' on Kompakt Pop had the girls at Kompakt's Beach Party at Sonar going gooey over Gui.
Gui used to work at majors EMI and BMG in Brazil and his discography is a also a little more unusual than most. It lists remixes and album production credits for Desiree and Garth Brooks(!!!).
This past weekend, Gui performed live at the 5 Days Off festival in Amsterdam, Berlin's Panoramabar and the Monegros Desert festival in Spain. We asked him which gig was the craziest:
"Well, the Panorama Bar in Berlin was a really cool gig. It's an old industrial [former] Nazi building, really heavy atmosphere, and I got a really great reception from the people. They were really crazy. I left the club at 8 a.m. and people were still partying. It it wasn´t for my flight to Barcelona, I could have partied till midday!!!!"
Skol Beats, Brazil's biggest electronic music festival, suggests there's no shortage of dance music afficionados in Gui's home country but what's happening in the underground minimal house/techno scene? Are there other Brazilian producers we should keep an eye out for?
"The Brazilian people are really clued up and every week we have names like Michael Mayer, Mathew Dear, Magda, Hell, Steve Bug. As for producers, there's a guy called Dudu Marote. His artist name is Prztz. Technically, I think he's one of the best producers in Brazil," says Gui.
Gui has briefly returned to Brazil after the first half of his European summer tour but next up for him on the release front is his debut track on Kompakt's Speicher series. 'The Rising Evil', a slice of sinister minimal techno, on Speicher 38 sees Gui sharing the bill with Oxia, who takes care of the B-side.

Gui has a 40-minute live set from March also named 'The Rising Evil Live Set' which you can download from the audio section of his website. His set from last weekend's 5 Days Off is also available for streaming here.
Gui's second 12" this month 'Division' sees him dabbling with electrohouse and summery progressive house vibes on the Harthouse Mannheim label. The original Harthouse was co-founded by Sven Vath and was instrumental in the trance movement in the early to late nineties. Vath left the label in 1997 but the label was revitalised in 2004 and renamed Harthouse Mannheim with recent releases from Zoo Brazil, Alexi Delano and Joel Mull.

Gui Boratto 'Division' is released on Harthouse Mannheim on July 30th, 2006.
Gui will be back on the continent in August and September to play more European dates including the Cologne Pop Festival, Nitsa in Barcelona and Circoloco in Ibiza.
