- 'Music:01' is the new Four:twenty label compilation mixed by electrohouser James Mowbray. Why didn't they ask labelmate Loco Dice? Maybe his phone was off the hook...
Back in 2002, Four:twenty Recordings unearthed a German tech house DJ and producer named Loco Dice with the release 'Phat Dope Shit'. Mr. Dice has since racked up 12"s on Ovum, Cocoon and Minus which impressed those with a hankering for the accessible end of minimal. Not much to complain about then. Unless you're Four:twenty of course.
As the label takes the plunge with their debut mix CD, RA is miffed that Loco Dice and his considerable skills as a DJ have been passed up. Oh well. Still, we're of a trusting nature and the label obviously has an eye for little-known talent and so our breath is bated for what newcomer James Mowbray will bring to the table.
First impressions is that he's a dirty electrohouse booster as evidenced on his collaboration with D Ramirez 'I Choose Anger'. He also finds time to be Managing Editor of the recently revamped Mixmag, which won't close any doors.
As a DJ, it looks like Mowbray draws on hip hop, house, techno and electro, promising to 'fuse gnarly melodies and acid bass into hypnotic techno and house.'
'Music:01' mixed by James Mowbray is a stew of past and present Four:twenty releases including tracks from Martin Buttrich (Loco Dice's production partner), Phonique, hotter than fire Jesse Rose, Drama Society and Adultnapper. The compilation also arrives with a DJ-friendly, unmixed eight-track bonus disc featuring early Loco Dice releases and exclusive tracks by Buttrich. Yum!
