- Come the first weekend of May, Pontin’s Holiday Centre will see around 5000 discerning music lovers grooving away till the early morning at the Southport Weekender festival. One of the biggest indoor music festivals in Europe, the Southport Weekender (now up to number 38), will take place over three days, May 5-7, 2006 in the North West of England. Created by Alex Lowes 18 years ago the Southport Weekender is a very important date for the house music fraternity, showcasing international DJs, producers and live performers. Featuring four exclusive arenas with state-of-the-art sound and production there will be no better place to experience new sounds and house classics. Room 1 – The Powerhouse The DJs playing in this 2000-capacity room are used to taking revellers on a musical journey with substance and style. Featuring the ‘very best in music and a world-class DJ line up, key names to look out for are Kerri Chandler, Quentin Harris, Frankie Feliciano and Terry Hunter. Room 2 – Bacardi B live Room Hugely popular and the most forward-thinking of the four rooms, the music here will span broken beat, nu-jazz, hip hop, drum 'n' bass, jazz, and deep house. Many of the DJs performing in this space bring a healthy dose of contemporary ideas to music will be rocking the big sound system alongside future heros. Names to catch are Kenny Dope, Jazztronik, Carl Craig and I G Culture. Room 3 – The Connoisseurs Corner Expect to hear soulful music and plenty of choice soul cuts in this more intimate room. Get ready for some smiles and hands-in-the-air action. Highlights include Norman Jay and Dr Bob Jones. Room 4 – The FunkBase This room features the ‘best in urban music’ including RnB, Soul, Hip Hop and club classics. Expect to see a lot of UK Radio names here including Trevor Nelson, Steve Sutherland and Shortee Blitz. There will also be two other rooms: the Sabai So Chilled Room and also a VIP room hosted by Favourtizm. The full line-up of Live Acts are still to be confirmed but expect the very best international acts steeped in soul. As in past years the Southport Weekender will coincide with the release of a mixed compilation featuring DJs and producers who have contributed to the long-running success of this very special soulful event. The event and its guests will also be featured on BBC Radio throughout the weekend. Southport Weekender tickets are on sale now.
