  • If you thought the Melbourne International Arts Festival was only about orchestras or theatre then you've been letting yourself down. This year's program put together by American Artistic Director Kristy Edmunds is diverse and exciting. It includes two shows by Japanese-born New York-based composer/artist Ryoji Ikeda that are essentially multi-media shows, combining his musical compositions with carefully chosen images and video that work together to illustrate a theme. The two shows take place at the Playhouse at the Arts Centre on Monday 10th and Tuesday 11th of October. C4I is both a concert and a film that uses data as its material and theme, highlighting the ways in which data shapes our understanding of the world. Video images of landscapes are progressively abstracted into a language of data with facts, figures and diagrams used in a montage with dazzling graphic impact. formula [vers 2.3]is a constantly evolving screen work updated with each presentation. It is a perfect synchronisation of Ikeda's sound frequencies and the images projected onto the screen on an otherwise empty white stage. The performance is designed to amplify the viewers perceptions through the use of dark, light, strobe effects, and rapid visual flashes of video montage accompanied by aural sensations such as morse code-like blips and the sounds of static. Ryoji also does DJing and has remixed David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto and others. He also currently has two exhibits, data.spectra and spectra II on at the Australian Centre of the Moving Image (ACMI) in Federation Square. See Ryoji in October to witness this highly influential global talent and two very different and well priced shows at the Melbourne Festival.
