  • Sick of festival camping and bathroom facilities? With Europe right in the midst of 'festival season', RA is happy to report there is an alternative for those wanting to get their freak on in a little more style - enter The Great Eastern Electronic Summer Ball, stage left. This Saturday 6th August, lovers of "Intelligent Dance Music" (IDM) will be getting down from 8pm-2am at London's Great Eastern Hotel at The Electronic Summer Ball. Intelligent Dance Music represents a "forward-thinking, experimental arm of techno, taking electronic music in various new directions" (Wikipedia). IDM influences range from the music of B12, Kirk DeGiorgio to more jazz-type influences, to the musique concrète school and avant-garde classical composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis; and early hip-hoppers like Mantronix - leading early exponents in the UK included The Aphex Twin (aka AFX aka Richard D. James) and Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence compilations. Specialist purveyors of IDM, Warp Records, Bleep.com, and Wheels Instead of Hooves will host the music in three rooms of the renowned Great Eastern Hotel next to Liverpool Street Station in London which was redeveloped in the 1990s by design guru Terence Conran. Additionally Warp Films will be taking care of film screenings. Limited numbers of tickets are still available (e-tickets only) from the Warp Records on-line store, priced at £10 each.
