  • Hollywood gives Steve Lawler The Skeleton Key image
  • Steve Lawler is about to become the latest DJ/producer to see his name scroll by in the music credits of a major Hollywood film, having remixed the title track to the new movie The Skeleton Key. Personally approached to do the remix by the film's director, Iain Softley (KPax, Hackers, Backbeat), Lawler joins the company of other dance music luminaries like Paul Oakenfold, BT, John Digweed and Nick Muir, who have all added an electronic flavour to some celluloid moments. This latest move by a major Hollywood picture to utilise the services of a dance music producer is once again a reflection of the inextricable link between electronic music, movies and movie soundtracks, which have long had an influence on dance music and club culture. Think Vangelis’ film score for Blade Runner, which in the past has frequently popped up in the DJ sets of John Digweed, Jonathan Lisle and James Zabiela. For The Skeleton Key, which is a supernatural thriller, director Softley wanted an underground and modern interpretation to accompany the dark atmospherics of the film. Softley says, “It struck me that Steve would be able to take it and run with it. Which he has – the track compliments the film perfectly. It’s dark, tribal and hypnotic." In typical Lawler fashion, expect to hear big tribal drums and a chilling tribal chant as you dip into your bucket of popcorn; the remix having a distinct dancefloor edge and retaining the dark journey element of many of Lawler's trademark sets and previous productions. The Skeleton Key will be released in cinemas in the UK on July 29th.
