- Danny Spencer and Kelvin Andrews make a return to acid house values and the sounds of 1981 on their debut full-length release.
"Do you remember what 1981 sounded like?" asks Soul Mekanik, the duo comprised of brothers Danny Spencer and Kelvin Andrews, on their debut album 'Eighty One' which will be released later this month on RIP Records.
The release marks an experimental return to acid house values for the pair whose previous releases on RIP were aimed more at the 'safe' end of the dancefloor and is a summation of their unusual and varied music career, which has included everything from a spot on Top of The Pops, Smash Hits covers and collaborations with Robbie Williams.
A reflection of the early electro, hip hop, pop, punk and disco sounds from the early eighties, Danny Spencer says, "We just arrived at this concept. We thought wouldn't it be good if we could go back to 1981 armed with the technology from now, and then place it in that context."
Decribed as 'charming leftfield house at its very best', 'Eighty One' defiantly gives the finger to dance music convention and invites us to simply enjoy the music for what it is, be it New York disco block boogie, fractured electro or warm, melodic, slightly off-kilter electronic body music.
