  • Cass & Slide are back in business after a rather lengthy break, commenting on their new single and plans for the future.

  • Producers of quality are like fine wines, they don’t get old, they simply become vintage (William Orbit, Nellee Hooper, etc). A fine example of dance vintage over the past decade have reunited in the studio once more to tantalise our audio taste buds. Despite engaging in various other projects during their time apart (including Slide working with Tim Healey on their Coburn band project for his own Frontier Recordings label, and Cass just finishing the Heretic Mix CD with Paolo Mojo), the mercurial Cass & Slide are back together again. Their first track in 4 years looks like it’s heading towards the exceptional Wall Of Sound, which is an interesting place for this previously pigeon holed duo to end up.
"On one hand it seems like forever ago that we were in the studio together" says Pete 'Slide' Martin, "yet it also feels like we’ve missed a beat or 2. We just kind of hooked up in the pub, and found that we had as much of a laugh as we used to – which was always the thing that made being in the studio never seem like work for us. Then, to be totally honest, there was no grand plan. We just got in the studio over a couple of weeks and just started to come up with sounds and ideas when we could around our other project schedules. Whilst I’ve been busy trying to finish post-production on the Coburn album that’s scheduled for release after the summer, Cass was finishing up his Heretic compilation with Paolo Mojo, and we actually ended up doing an exclusive little track in a day called The Bunny that ended up on the CD. With all of this other stuff going on, and with the time constraints associated with each project, it meant that when we got together to work on stuff, there was no pressure at all and it worked really well as a result I think…"
'Lost Life' is the end result of these random studio meet ups much like Pete, Cass is excited to have re-united.
"A studio is always such a great place to be creative when you’re usually only 5 minutes away from cracking up over one thing or another. It felt totally natural to be back in the studio with Pete, and yet also nicely inspirational, fresh & exciting to see how he’s developed as a producer since we last worked together. I don’t want to brown nose him too much, but it was just pretty cool. We just brain dumped ideas, sounds and thoughts that we both had stored away and Lost Life was the result."
Wall Of Sound has enjoyed Cass’ recent productions, picking up his collaboration with Tom Mangan ‘Iknowuknow’ earlier this year and he is genuinely pleased to be working with the London based label once more. RA asked Cass, how the WOS connection came about:
"Well after we were finished, I just wanted to get some feedback from some people and so sent it to Alvin and Mark at WOS. They had done a great job with ‘iknowuknow’, so I thought they could give me some good old fashioned constructive criticism. Turns out they dig it as much as us and considering the heritage of WOS, their roster and the fact that I must have funded a lot of their parties with the proceeds of all of the records that I’ve bought from them over the years, I couldn’t think of anywhere I’d rather have the track."
Release date is not in stone, but don’t be surprised to be record shopping in September and see this on the shelf.
