- The American producer's second album will land in late March.
The Range's next full-length, Potential, is coming through Domino on March 25th.
James Hinton began producing in 2011 in Providence, Rhode Island, releasing EPs and an album that brought together elements of R&B, jungle, footwork, grime and Baltimore club, mostly for Brighton label Donky Pitch. Now, with Potential, he's moving over to the indie rock giant Domino, which counts George FitzGerald and Bob Moses among its other recent electronic signings.
Potential was inspired by Hinton's trawling of YouTube, finding odd vocal samples in unusual places, and often from videos with very few views. Samples from London's MC SdotStar and Jamaica's Naturaliss each racked up less than 100 views, while on "Falling Out Of Phase," he samples someone's Keyshia Cole cover that was performed in front of a shower curtain.
"I found each person by using a small set of search terms on YouTube," Hinton says. "Each song is inextricably linked to the point in time that I came across each video. I endeavored to tie the songs of Potential together by telling my own story alongside the stories of the people I sampled. Every song tries to acknowledge a sense of vulnerability or difficulty in life, as well as an intense drive to cope with problems in ways that don't drag you into the abyss."
The deluxe version of the LP will come with a bonus four-track 12-inch called Strings. Listen to first single "Florida" here.
