- The two artists contribute a 12-inch each to a record that "strays ever-so-slightly into New Age territory."
Border Community has announced details of a split double-LP from James Holden and Luke Abbott.
The two producers have each contributed an extended piece of music to the package, which Border Community describe as "a pair of extended synth meditations indulging their respective loves of arpeggio and drone." Both compositions take up a 12-inch each on the double-vinyl release—Holden's effort, a collaboration with tabla player Camilo Tirado, is 45 minutes long, while Abbott's clocks in at 30 minutes. Border Community say both pieces were made in response to the duo's involvement with events in London and Amsterdam in 2015 celebrating the 80th birthday of American minimalist Terry Riley.
According to Border Community, Holden and Abbott's goal "was not to create carbon copy soundalikes of the Riley canon, but rather to immerse themselves in the challenge of writing the same type of hypnotic, slowly unfolding linear music as championed by Riley, in direct contrast to the ubiquitous peaks and drops of the Western classical and popular musical paradigms." The label adds that the results "stray ever-so-slightly into New Age territory." In addition to the double-vinyl version, Outdoor Museum of Fractals / 555Hz will also get a digital release.
