  • Chicago club Smart Bar will celebrate its 33 1/3rd anniversary next Friday the 20th with an all-building bash taking place in the club proper and upstairs at Metro. Venue owner Joe Shanahan originally started Smart Bar July 1982 on the building's top floor (above Metro), before moving it to its current downstairs location. While the upstairs room has carved out a legendary reputation in rock history, Smart Bar is an electronic music institution which featured the late Frankie Knuckles on its opening-weekend lineup, and launched its own label earlier this year. To mark 33 1/3 years of operation (a number representing the industry-standard playing speed, in rotations per minute, of a vinyl LP), a cast of six DJs—current and former residents and friends who've regularly played the club over the years—will hit the decks both downstairs and upstairs. Colette, senior resident Justin Long, Michael Serafini (who we interviewed on our Exchange podcast earlier this year) and Garrett David will handle the music in Smart Bar, whose doors will open at 10 PM, while Mark Farina and DJ Heather are booked for Metro, which opens at 11 PM.
