  • Details have been revealed for a triple-vinyl compilation, curated by French artists Brawther and Alixkun, that chronicles the early days of Japan's underground deep house scene. Brawther & Alixkun Present ??? Once Upon A Time In Japan...—the term ??? translates to "house"—has been in the works for a few years now. To be issued ahead of a related documentary named ???, the compilation explores the house sounds that came out of Japan from the late '80s through the mid-'90s. A press release promises a "one-stop shop of all things early Japanese house." It features rare and out-of-print material, remastered for the occasion, from more prominent names like Soichi Terada and Yukihiro Fukutomi along with lesser-known figures including Katsumi Hidano (AKA Violets) and GWM. Two labels are handling its November release: Les Disques Mystiques (a new imprint) and Jazzy Couscous, which Alixkun, who lives in Japan, co-founded earlier this year. The compilation is the second lengthy release that Brawther has been involved in this year—back in April, back-catalogue tracks he produced for Chez Damier's label Balance (along with a bit of unreleased material) were collected into the Endless retrospective.
