- Blackest Ever Black will release new and archival EPs from the downcast post-punk group in October.
Tropic Of Cancer will release the Stop Suffering EP as well as Archive: The Downwards Singles via Blackest Ever Black on October 30th.
Stop Suffering is the first release from the group since their 2013 debut LP, Restless Idylls, a record which RA's Aaron Coultate said cemented its "sleek and addictive" sound. The band's leader, Camella Lobo, is now working with another LA-based musician, Joshua Eustis (of Sons Of Magdelene and Telefon Tel Aviv). The new songs retain the melancholic feel of previous efforts, but Lobo says "the idea of “self-help” [is] particularly pertinent to these songs,' specifically the themes of "rebirth, redefining the borders of the self and learning to be happy again." The EP comprises two new tracks and an alternate mix of "I Woke Up And The Storm Was Over," a cut which opened Blackest Ever Black's LA-inspired compilation from earlier this summer.
Archive: The Downwards Singles takes stock of Tropic Of Cancer's early work for the Regis and Female-run label. At the time, Juan Mendez, AKA Silent Servant, was in the group. Blackest looks back on these early cuts reverentially, saying Tropic Of Cancer's first single, The Dull Age/Victims, was informally "BLACKEST000, the ur-Blackest record, and together with Raime’s EP demo... sketched the outlines of a universe we still inhabit, and are still exploring." The three songs were recorded between 2009 and 2011.
