  • The landscape for Stems is beginning to take shape. The audio format, developed by Native Instruments but released as an open-source standard that can be used by any compatible software or device, gives DJs access to four parts of a full mix: drums, bass, synths and vocals, for example. The idea is to expand the options available to DJs in the mix—DJs can mix between and combine elements of tracks in ways they couldn't with EQ and faders alone. (Stems, packaged inside standard MPEG-4 files, also play as standard stereo mixes through iTunes, CDJs, etc.) Now, Native Instruments say they have several hundred labels who have signed with Stems, including such notables as R&S Records, 50 Weapons, Ovum Recordings, Ghostly International, M-nus, Hypercolour and Hotflush Recordings. You'll find a more extensive list of labels quoted below.
